Aaron Sargonquatto Pequongay


Aaron (Sargonquatto) Pequongay was the son of Antoine Pequongay and Elizabeth. Information on Aaron's parents and siblings is here.

Aaron enlisted in company K, First Sharpshooters, Feb. 14, 1865 at Grand Rapids, for 1 year, age 21. Mustered Feb. 14, 1865. Discharged at Detroit, Mich., Aug. 11, 1865.

Saw-gaw-naw-quaw-do is listed on the 1868 Annuity rolls, as a single male, receiving $15.85, #34.

On 9 Feb 1870 in Omena, Aaron, age 26, married Susan Allen, age 15, daughter of Moses Naishkaze (Allen). Rev. Peter Dougherty officiated.


Saw-gaw-naw-quaw-do is listed on the 1870 Annuity roll as #32 on page 38, one male and one female, receiving $30.60

Daughter Lucy is born about 1870.  The Old Mission/Grove Hill Church Records state Susan Allen, Sahgahnahqud, had daughter Lucy baptized 1 Jan 1871.

Daughter Julia Ann is born 15 Nov 1873. Son Luke is born 1876. Son John is born 14 Sep 1884, dies prior to 1900.

In 1889 Lucy entered Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. School records.

Records show that both Aaron applied for a military pension in 1890 and 1909. Susan applied for a widow's pension in 1916. Link to pension records.

Daughter Pearl May is born 5 Jun 1892.

From "The Census of the State of Michigan, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, 1894" volume 3, page 156:


The 1894 State Census, Leelanau Township lists: Aron Pequongay, 50, Susan, wife, 40; Lucy, daughter, 22; Julia, daughter, 20; Luke, son, 18; Pearl M. daughter, 2; David Philip, son-in-law, 21.


Son Luke attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He is mentioned in The Indian Helper, vol. VII, #22, page 3, as a member of the Indian boys debate team.


Luke was discharge on 30 Jun 1894 - time expired, ill health; page 157 #1719.

Luke died in 1895.

The 1900 census of Leelanau Township lists Aaron Pequongay, born Feb. 1844, age 56, married 31 years, farmer, owns mortgaged farm. His wife is Susan, born Apr 1854, age 46, has given birth to 10 children, 3 are living. Daughters are Lucy, born Nov 1870, age 29; Julia, born Dec 1873, age 26; and Pearl M., born Jun 1891, age 8. All are listed as full Ottawa.


A marriage license was issued in Leelanau county on 1 Nov 1901 to Isaac Andrews, 21 and Lucy Pequongay, 30 but no marriage information was entered.

Daughter Pearl May died 19 Sep 1906 in Leelanau township. Lucy's Carlisle school records (link above) says "my sister Pearl May Pequongay she died she was taken sick at Haskell, Lawrence, Kansas she was brought home sick."


Lucy's Carlisle records also mention that her sister Julia Ann went to school in Kansas (Haskell).

On 23 Dec 1907 in Leland, Julia Nokqunan, 34, daughter of Aaron Pequongay and Susan Allen married Philip King, 25, son of unknown.



Durant Roll Field Notes for line 32 page 38 show Aaron with wife Susan, age 54; daughter Lucy, 37, married to Isaac Andrews, 27, no children; daughter Julia, 36, married to Philip King, 27, sons Perry, 5, lives with grandparents and William, born Mar 1908, died Mar 1908 age 20 days; daughter Pearl, 14, died 19 Sep 1907.




1910 Federal Census - Leelanau township, dwelling 17, family 17 has Aaron, age 70, laborer, owns mortgaged home. He states he has been married twice, 40 years for current marriage. Susan is 57, married once for 40 years, 10 children born, 2 children living. Grandson Perry King age 6 is living with them.


Aaron died in Leelanau township on 4 Jun 1916.



He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena.

After Aaron's death, Susan moved to Traverse City, Grand Traverse County. The 1920 census finds her at 518 Fifth Street. Family consists of Isaac Andrews, head, 39, painter of houses; his wife Lucy, 49, daughter Stella, 4 2/12, niece Elizabeth Koon, 19 and mother-in-law Susan Pequongay, 67.


The 1921 City Directory for Traverse City lists Susan as boarding at 535 Randolph.

Lucy died 22 Dec 1924 in Traverse City. She is buried in Omena.


Aaron left no will according to the probate records of Leelanau county, dated 19 Oct 1925.







The 19 Aug 1926 issue of Traverse City Record Eagle have Mrs. Pequongay performing a vocal number at the meeting of the Grand Traverse Grange.




1927 Traverse City City Directory:


1930 Federal Census, Traverse City, 535 Randolph, has Susan Pequongay, head, 76, widow, basketmaker; Julia A. King, daughter, 58, widow, basketmaker; Perry J. King, grandson, 27, truck driver at canning factory.

Susan died on 20 Jul 1939 in Traverse City.


Her death was announced in the Traverse City Record Eagle of 20 Jul 1939, page 3.



Susan was buried in Hillcrest cemetery, Omena, Michigan.
