Augustus Boushaw

Augustus Bushaw / Boushaw / Bemassawe was born c1843, the son of Charles Beauchamp (pronounced Bow-shaw) and Angelique.  Augustus and his mother, Angelique, were members of the Little Traverse Bay Band.

From Larry Wyckoff "In 1836, this band was under Chief Maw kas se gun, with a population of 249 individuals. The village was located on Little Traverse Bay at present day Harbor Springs. In 1839, the annuity payment roll shows a population of 494 and the chief was Ne saw waw quot. He remained the chief of this band until 1856 when he was replaced by Paul Shaw waw nay se. Around 1870, Paul Shaw waw nay se was replaced by Daniel Ne saw waw quot."

Augustus' mother,  Angelique Pa me we se way #463, was alotted 40 acres - SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 32, Township 36 North, Range 6 West

Charles Beauchamp was a Canadian trader. As a white man he did not appear in the annuity rolls with his family, but this doesn't mean he wasn't with them. Augustus was either the only child to survive childhood, or his siblings were much older and on their own by 1857.

On 5 Feb 1862 in Little Traverse, Augustus, age 20, married Lucy Wasson, age 17.






Civil War

Augustus enlisted in Company K, 1st Michigan Sharp Shooters on 28 Jun 1863 at Little Traverse for 3 years. He gave his age as 20. 





He was mustered in on 20 Jul 1863. Unfortunately his name is in the damaged part between the two pages shown below. 





Augustus' service records show he was ill many times. 










He was mustered out on 11 Aug 1865.






There are no pension records for Augustus.

Daughter Mary Martina was born 6 Apr 1868 in Emmet county.




Son Charles died 8 Oct 1868 in Emmet county, age 5 months 28 days, no cause given. 




Daughter Mary Martina died 23 Jan 1869 in Little Traverse. Aged 9 months, 15 days, cause was fever.

Daughter Catherine died 30 Aug 1870 in Little Traverse. Aged 10 months, cause chronic diarrhea.

Mother Angelique was awarded her land patent on 6 Jun 1871.





Daughter Rosa was born 4 Jul 1871.


Father Charles died 1 Sep 1871 in Little Traverse of chronic diarrhea.

Daughter Mary was born May 1874. She died 2 Jun 1874 in Little Traverse, age 1 month, cause c___ spinal megetis.





Son Louis was born Jun 1875. He died 4 Sep 1875 in Little Traverse, aged 3 months, cause chills and fever. 




Mother Angelique died 30 Jan 1876. Age 75, widowed, said to be born in Kent county, parents unknown. Cause of death was consumption.




Daughter Anna was born in 1876. 

Son Martin was born 26 Jun 1878.



6 Dec 1880 - probate file #70 for Angelic Bushaw, minor, states she is over the age of fourteen, the daughter of Augustus and Lucy Bushaw and the adopted daughter of Angelic Bushaw or Beauchamp deceased. Paul Wasson, Paul Etawagishig and Andrew Wasson petition for Paul Wasson to be named her guardian. Also states she was 18 on 6 Jan 1880, and was named in grandmother's will.









Daughter Mary died in Feb 1882 in Little Traverse. Age 1 year, cause inflammation of lungs.

Wife Lucene died 15 Sep 1884 in Harbor Springs, age 39, cause unknown. Parents Paul and Martha Wasson.




Augustus died 23 Mar 1887.

Augustus was buried in Lake View cemetery in Harbor Springs. 






Daughter Anna, 19, was married 9 Jul 1894 to Mathew A. Assinaway, 28, son of Anthony Assineway and Angelic Kagoma.

Daughter Anna died in 1954 and was buried at St. Ignatius in Good Hart.
