Betoes A-won-o-quot/Awanakwad

Betoes A-won-o-quot was born about 1839 in the area that later became Cheboygan county, Michigan.




Other names/spellings for include Petros, Peter, Boetius Awanakwad, Pierre Banquot, Pease Banquot, Petres Almonoquot, Peter Awwawnawquot, Petozoourquitte and Owanoquot.

Son Baziel was born 16 Apr 1857 at Middle Village, baptized 6 May 1857.

Boetius Awanakwad, 20, married Theresa, 16, on 3 Jun 1859 in Emmet County. 




Son Antoine was said to be born 18 May 1860, died young.

Son Benjamin was said to be born 1 Oct 1861, baptized 13 Oct 1861.

Petros A-won-o-quot of Little Traverse enlisted in company K, First Sharpshooters, 8 Jun 1863 at Little Traverse for 3 years, age 25. Mustered 20 Jun 1863. Died of wounds received in action 20 Feb 1865.

Betoes died 20 Feb 1865 after treatment for wounds received during the siege of Petersburg, Virginia. He was first buried at the Ninth Corps Hospital Cemetery at Mead Station. The body was later removed and reburied at Poplar Grove National Cemetery.

Poplar Grove National Cemetery was established in 1866 as a re-interment site for soldiers killed at Petersburg.

Therese died, 19 Oct 1910. Cause was not given.  Her birth was given as 2 Jul 1836, father as William Atawish. She was buried in an unmarked grave in Good Hart. Informant was Lucy Abram.
