Samuel Chatfield

Samuel Chatfield was born c1837 in Lapeer County, Michigan, the son of Shawwnawnawquot (William Chatfield) and Kinnequay.

Samuel was said to have married Nawzewawbawnoquay / Charlotte Natahbenego on 20 Dec 1855 in Midland. 

Son Kay-way-kezhick was said to be born in 1856 [based on age on Gruett Roll, born later based on census and death records.]


1859 Annuity Roll - Saml. Chatfield, one man, one woman, one child, received $12.81

Daughter Martha was said to be born 7 Oct 1861.

1861 Annuity Roll - Samuel Chatfield, one man, one woman, two children, received $24.48


Chatfield, W. Samuel enlisted in Company K, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters on 18 May 1863 at Isabella City, for 3 years, at age 26. He mustered in 26 May 1863 at Detroit.

Line 11 - Chatfield, W. Samuel. Note says a $75 bounty was paid to the men.


He was first detailed at a company cook while the regiment was on guard duty at Camp Douglas in Chicago. 

Jun 1864 finds the regiment in Virginia. Samuel was ill and was sent to the depot hospital at City Point, Virginia where he remained until August.

On 19 Aug 1864 Samuel was killed in action at Weldon Railroad outside of Petersburg, Virginia.

1864 Annuity Roll - Charlotte Chatfield, no man, one woman, two children, received $18.96

Charlotte filed a Dependent widow's pension application on 29 Nov 1864


Charlotte remarried before receiving a pension.

Charlotte Chatfield, 28, and James W. Nichols, 32, both of Isabella county, married on 12 Oct 1865 in Gratiot county.



Daughter Martha died in 1866 [From Gruett roll]


The Gruett Roll lists Samuel and Charlotte several times.

Son Andrew died 15 Apr 1872 at age 11. 



Samuel's land patent for his treaty allotment of 40 acres was signed 27 May 1871 SW1/4 of the NW1/4 of section 1 T14N R4W.  While this is after Samuel's death, there is no probate record to show what happened to the land.
