Sash ke bon quot



Little is known about Sashkebonquot/Aish ke baw naw quot. He gave his age as 45 at enlistment, born c1818. Missing are the names of his parents and if he had siblings. 

He was said to have married Etoqua/E-taw-quay/Mary, in 1834. He was said to have married Saline on 4 Apr 1843 in East Saginaw. Both women have children in the same time period, and both file for widow's pensions after his death.

Son Henry was said to be born in 1863 [Child of Saline - from pension]


Sashkebonquot enlisted in Company K, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters on 18 May 1863 at Isabella City. He was about 45, born c1818 in Saginaw county, occupation farmer. Described as 5'8", black hair and eyes, dark complexion. 

In July 1863 Sashkebonquot was listed as a company cook at the Detroit Arsenal in Dearborn. 

Next Company K was sent to Camp Douglas, near Chicago, to guard Confederate prisoners. Sashkebonquot was given a pass and went into Chicago on 27 Dec 1863, where he was killed in a railroad accident.

From These Men Have Seen Hard Service by Ray Herek, page 77: "One of the Indians, Pvt. Sash-ko-bon-quot, a 45-years old enlistee from Pinconning, died when he was crushed between two railroad cars. Subsequent investigations showed him to have been drunk at the time."


30 May 1864 pension - Mary/Etoqua, a resident of Buena Vista township, Saginaw county, stated she and Sashkobonquot were married about 1834 and had children Wawwegoshshe, 15; Penasewonquad, 10; Snakekeghink, 8; Gawpaykeshinkgoqua, 4; and Wabeskonquad/Julia, 2.  Chief Naugechegumme stated that Mary was considered Sashkobonquot's wife and the children were their offspring. 

5 Jul 1865 pension - Saline, a resident of East Saginaw, stated she and Sashkebonquot were married on 4 Apr 1843, and had children Isabella, 12; John, 10; William, 8; Sarah, 6; Mary, 4; and Henry, 2. James David, missionary, stated that Saline was considered Sashkobonquot's wife and the children were their offspring. 

Neither wife received a pension because Sashkebonquot was not killed in the line of duty.
