Charles Carter was not from Michigan. He enlisted 22 Jun 1864, and joined the regiment on 7 Jul 1864 in the field. He gave his age as 21 years, 6 months and said he was born near Hagerstown, Maryland. Charles was 5' 10", and a farmer. He was possibly a member of the Lenape (also called Delaware) tribe. Unfortunately he was killed only weeks later, on 30 Jul 1864, at the Battle of the Crater.
"In particular he [Lieutenant Randall] noticed Pvt. Charles Carter (Co. K) fall before the Sharpshooters reached the rebel defenses. A Maryland Indian, Carter had joined the Sharpshooters during the campaign; he had hardly been with the regiment one month before dying under that blazing morning sun at Petersburg." "The Indians had taken a beating on 30 July. Survivors remembered that Charles Carter and Moses Williams had died in the fighting."[These Men Have Seen Hard Service by Raymond J. Herek, page 234]
