John Wesley

John Wesley / Nay-yaw-waw-sung / May-yaw-waw-sung was born about 1844. 

"Sometime around 1850 a number of members from Caub mo say’s Flat River band
moved further up the Flat River into Montcalm County. They purchased lands in Douglass Township and formed a new band under Chief Shaw gwaw baw no. In 1853 there were 84 members in this band which increased to 129 in 1855. He was listed as the chief of this band in 1865 and in 1866, Aish ke baw gosh was the new chief and was still listed as chief in 1872. This band took their allotments near Caub mo say’s band in Elbridge, Crystal and Custer townships." [From Larry Wyckoff on academia.edu]

John Wesley or Wesler enlisted in company K, First Sharpshooters, 1 Feb 1864 at Kalamazoo for 3 years, age 28. Mustered 2 Feb 1864.

Page 1 - from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Nelson Convalescent Camp, Camp Nelson, Kentucky - admitted 19 Feb 1864, discharged to regiment on 4 Apr 1864.

John is next sent to the 2d Division U.S.A. General Hospital in Alexandria, VA from the field due to intermittant fever on 27 Apr 1864.


On 21 May 1864 he is transferred to Satterlee General Hospital in West Philadelphia.



John is returned to duty on 18 Oct 1864. 


Promoted Corporal 1 Mar 1865. Mustered out at Delaney House, D.C. 28 Jul 1865

John returned to Oceana county Michigan and started a family with Mary, daughter of Philip Bailey and Mary Blacksmith.

Son Chah ne died 15 Oct 1868 in Elbridge, age unknown.

Twins (one male, one female) were born 8 Jul 1869 and died 10 Oct 1869 (age 3 month 2 days).



The first Federal Census found for John is 1870, Elbridge, Oceana county. John is 26, his spouse, Meusnqua, is 21.


The agricultural schedule for 1870 says John has 10 acres improve and 70 acres wooded for a total farm worth of $600. He has two horses worth $100 and grew 100 bushels of Indian corn.

Elizabeth's (Mis-oquon-won) birth is recorded as Jan 1873 in Elbridge. Her parents are listed as John Wesley and Pash-nan-ne-quay.


On 10 Jun 1880 the Mason county clerk recorded a death for an unnamed child of John Wesley as taking place in 1879, age and sex unknown.

1890 Potawatomi Claim - Fountain, Mason Co. - John Wesley, laborer, wife Pa-_-ne-nee-qua, children Pen-_-me-ge-zick, Wah-s_-me-gay-qua. [Mary, Frank and Elizabeth? Emma not born until 1894?].

2 May 1892 John Wesley, age 48 married Pashna Nequay, age 36. They list their residence as Fountain. John's parents are listed at John Blacksmith (father) and Philip Bailey (mother) while Mary's father is unknown and mother is Sau Gooqa. It was the first marriage for both, they were married in Fountain by a justice of the peace.


The Durant roll field notes for #27 page 52. John Wesley or Naw-yaw-waw-sung is 67, residing in Freesoil. His wife Mary is 56 and is noted as being on the 1870 roll with her husband. Son Frank is 22 and unmarried, daughter Amy [Emma] is 14. Daughter Lizzie is 32, widow of James Wilson who died in Aug 1907. She lives in Freesoil with sons Roger, 13, Chas. 11, Wm. 9 and daughters Nancy, 4 and Sarah born Jul 1907.


John died in Grant, Mason county on 26 Sep 1908.

"John Wesley departed this life Saturday, September 26th, and was buried Monday in Grant cemetery. He served in the Civil war and had been placed on the pension roll."

Mary's probate records - Mason County, Michigan

In 1920 Mary is living in Mancelona, Antrim county. She is 71, widowed and listed as aunt of Charles Bailey who is head of the family. Also in the household are Lucy Bailey (Charles' mother), age 73, John Pasha (Charles' uncle), age 75, and Emma Ramson, age 25 (Charles' cousin) and Mabel Ramson, 5/12 second cousin of Charles. [Emma is Mary's daughter and Mabel is Mary's granddaughter].


Mary died 4 Jul 1925 in Grant, Mason county.

Children of John and Mary who lived to have families are Elizabeth, Frank and Emma.
