James Arwonogezice/Way-say-ke-zhick/Wassagejig/Lightsky





James was said to be born 10 Apr 1838 at Old Mission (now in Grand Traverse county), son of W. Wahsagshik and Jennie Wonah/Mary Obasha/Wesba.

He was first in the 1858 annuity roll under Chief Aw-ko-we-say

Daughter Eliza was born about 1862 [From 1870 census]

James enlisted in company K, First Sharpshooters, 12 Sep 1863 at Little Traverse for 3 years, age 25. Mustered 21 Oct 1863 at Camp Douglas, Cook county, Illinois.


James used the name Arwongezice while in service.


16 Apr 1864 James was sent to the US General Hospital at Annapolis with a severe cold. Upon return to his company he again suffered from a severe cold, not returning to duty until August 1864.


In May 1865 James was detailed as a company cook. In June he was assigned to the Quartermaster Department in Washington D.C.

He was discharged at Detroit, 11 Aug 1865.

Daughter Eliza Anneskah, age 17, died 6 May 1881 from childbirth



Daughter Sarah, 17, was married to Levi Genereau on 6 Apr 1889 in Charlevoix.





James applied for a pension 17 Apr 1889 



Daughter Wa-san, 19, married William Jungwa, 21, on 19 Jun 1889 in Omena. She gave her mother's name as Sophia Pepequa.




James was a member of GAR Woolsey Post #399 - Northport; listed as serving as quartermaster sergeant on 30 Sep 1889.





James was also a member of GAR Baxter Post #119 - Charlevoix





Received Pension #527059 on 28 Jan 1891. James was given $12 per month, retroactive to 12 Jul 1890. {Increased to $15 in 1908 and $27 by 1913.]


Daughter Rebecca died 30 Apr 1894 in Charlevoix of fever. Her age was given as 27.





Sophia died 7 Mar 1896 in Charlevoix.




James married Louisa Naongaby 12 Dec 1896 in Charlevoix

James resided at the Soldiers' North Home in Grand Rapids from 7 Dec 1901 to 1 May 1907.
