Cornelius Hall

Cornelius Ward Hall (Negawnesay/Kawgaygawbowe) was the son of Frederick (Kawgaygawbowe) and Brickerd (Ann/Mahwazoo). His death certificate gives his birth as 8 Apr 1844, and his military records say he is born in Ionia.

The 1857 annuity roll lists Kaw gay gaw baw we, chief, with a family consisting of 2 males, 1 female and 4 children, receiving $22.12


The 1858 annuity roll lists Kaw gay gaw bo we, chief, with a family consisting of 1 male, 1 female and 5 children, receiving $29.47



Cornelius was baptized at the age of fourteen on 21 Nov 1858 by Rev. A. M. Fitch of the Pentwater Methodist Episcopal Church, Oceana County, same day as his brother Joseph's wedding.

The 1859 annuity roll lists Kaw gay gaw bo we, chief, with a family consisting of 1 male, 1 female and 5 children receiving $9.59


The 1860 Federal Census of Pere Marquette township, Mason county has: Cah-ga-gah-bah-wa, male, 65; Mah-wa-zoo, female, 63; John Hall, 19; Cornelius Hall, 18; Masahaungeek, female, 5; Taahquahne, male, 9. [Mah-wa-zoo was too old to have given birth to the two youngest.]



No record has been found of Cornelius registering for the draft, however several other Halls did register.

Muster In Roll - Hall, Cornelius, b. Ionia, Michigan, age 18, farmer, enlisted 3 Sep 1864 at Grand Rapids, mustered 3 Sep 1864 at Grand Rapids by Capt. Bailey, for 1 year, eyes - black, hair - black, complexion - dark, height 5'8", bounty paid 33 1/3, value of clothing drawn, 14.37.

On 26 Dec 1864, Cornelius was admitted to a hospital near Petersburg, Virginia with diarrhea.

Cornelius was wounded in the right hand on 2 Apr 1865 in the battle before Petersburg. He was treated and sent to City Point hospital. on 18 Apr 1865 he was returned to duty. He was discharged from the army on 20 May 1865 and returned to Michigan.

20 Sep 1865 Cornelius took Florence Nibnesey as his bride. Ceremony was performed by Rev. Isaac Greensky.

Cornelius' daughter Lucy died Jul 1868 at Riverton, Mason county. Her age is given as one year.

1870 Federal Census T18N R16W Mason county has Cornelius Hall, 28, farmer, along with Frances, 30 and Isaac, age one.


On 24 Sep 1874 in Eden, Mason county, Cornelius' father, Frederick Hall, died at age 80. Record states he was married and born in Grand River.



On 13 Jun 1878 Cornelius Kaw gay gaw baw received 160 acres in the SE 1/4 of section 14, Township 18 North, Range 16 West, Mason county.


The 1880 Federal Census of Custer, Mason county lists the family as Cornelius, 38, farming; Florence, wife, 38, keeping house; Isaac, 11, son; Lucinda, 4, daughter; Fredrick, 5/12, born Feb.

Line 7 - Cornelius Hall, 15 acres tilled, 125 acres woodland, $1,000 value of farm including land and buildings, $50 value of implements and machinery, $7 wages paid, hired labor for 2 weeks, $75 estimated value of all farm productions, 15 acres not mown, 2 working oxen, 2 acres wheat, 30 bushels producted 1879.


Cornelius' son Frederick died 19 Apr 1882 in Custer, Mason county of brain fever. He was 2 years old.



Cornelius and Florence welcomed son Wilbor on 5 Oct 1882 in Custer, Mason county.


On 6 Mar 1883 Cornelius applied for an invalid pension.


Cornelius and Florence (Frances) had daughter Alice, born 30 Jun 1885 in St. Helen, Roscommon county.



The TT Caldwell G.A.R. post #365 was organized in Lake City, Missaukee County in 1886. Cornelius was member #54 of this post, serving as Officer of the guard in 1894. The post disbanded in 1911.

1890 Federal Census - Veterans Schedule, Missaukee county. Line 8 is Cornelius W. Hall, private, Company K, 1 Mich Inf., served 5 Sep 1864 to 4 Jun 1865 - total of 10 months 11 days. Post Office is Star City.
Daughter Lucinda/Lucy was married to Henry Shenosky on 1 May 1890 in Missaukee county. Her age is given as 16, born in Mason county. While the marriage info in not on this record, Cornelius, as justice of the peace, officiated at this wedding.



Cornelius and Florence lost their youngest when Alice died 29 Mar 1893 in West Branch, Missaukee county. [vol 1 page 41, top line]


Cornelius is listed as living in West Branch in the "Census of the State of Michigan 1894 Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, Volume III, compiled by Washington Garnder, Secretary of State.


Isaac married Margaret Rapp 23 Dec 1894 in West Branch, Missaukee county. This wedding was also performed by Cornelius as Justice of the Peace.

Isaac's son, Edward, was born 6 Jul 1895.

Cornelius was elected Justice of the Peace in Missaukee county with his term beginning 5 Apr 1897. He served until 4 Apr 1901.

Cornelius' wife Florence died 13 Apr 1897 in West Branch, Missaukee county of paralysis. Age is given as 54.  On 14 May 1897 his granddaughter, Eunice Shawnosky died at one month old. A few months later Cornelius suffered another loss when daughter Lucinda Shawnosky died 23 Aug 1897 in West Branch, Missaukee county. Her age is given as 27 years.

All three are listed in the death record below.

Hall, head, born Oct 1844, age 55, widowed, farmer, name Negansa, tribe Ottawa; Isaac, son, born Jul 1870, 29, married 6 years, farmer, Ottawa; Maggie, daughter-in-law, born Sep 1877, 20, married 6 years, 3 children born, 3 children living, Pottawatomie; Edward, grandson, born Jul 1895, 4, Ottawa; Alice, granddaughter, born Oct 1896, 3, Ottawa; Elijah, grandson, born Dec 1898, 1, Ottawa, Showonasge, Williber, grandson, born Apr 1891, 9, Ottawa.


Isaac's son David was born 13 Mar 1901.

Cornelius was again elected as Justice of the Peace. This term ran from 6 Apr 1903 to 4 Jul 1907.

Isaac's son Joseph was born 19 Dec 1902 in West Branch, Missaukee county



Isaac's daughter Delia was born in 1905.

Isaac's wife Maggie died 19 Jan 1908 in West Branch and is buried in Star City Cemetery.

Cornelius died 5 Aug 1917 in West Branch, Missaukee county, of Brights disease. His death certificate gives a birth date of 8 Apr 1844. Informant was son Isaac.


Tombstone - Star City Cemetery, Missaukee county.


Cornelius Hall's name is on the Veterans Memorial Wall in Lake City.



Between 1910 and 1920 Isaac married Martha Kewondeway. She died 6 Aug 1920 in West Branch and is buried in Star City Cemetery.



Isaac, son of Cornelius and Florence, had six children with wife Maggie Rapp:

1) Edward, born 6 Jul 1895, died 11 Feb 1936 Leelanau township, married 16 Aug 1923 in Leland to Jessie Shawandase.

4) David, born 13 Mar 1901, died 17 Mar 1975, married 5 Jul 1932 in Northport to Mabel Pewash.



5) Joseph, born 19 Dec 1902 in West Branch (birth record above), died 29 Oct 1954 in Traverse City, married 5 Nov 1928 in Leelanau county to Ella Sands

Star City - settlement dates from approximately 1872. Name changed to Star City on 13 Fed 1885.

  3. Loved seeing all the old Michigan records. My husband has ancestors who enlisted in the Grand Rapids area. I'll have to look to see if they served together.

    This would be my great-great-great grandpa - I'm named after my great-grandma Delia (Cornelius' granddaughter).
